How to Prepare Your Home for an Electric Vehicle

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Charging

If you are considering an EV in New Castle, you are making an excellent choice. Electric vehicles offer several environmental benefits while still delivering an exciting drive on the roads of Indianapolis and Yorktown. Installing an electric vehicle home charger can make powering up your vehicle a breeze. Learn how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle in the guide below from Greg Hubler Ford.

1. Choose Your Method of EV Charging

Looking to take home a Mustang Mach-E? First, you will need to determine which type of electric vehicle charging station you want. When it comes to home charging there are two main options.

  • With a Level 1 electric vehicle home charger, it can take a full day to charge your EV.
  • With a Level 2 electric vehicle home charger, you can charge your EV in just a few hours. This type of electric vehicle charging station will need to be installed by a professional.

2. Prep Your Garage

If it’s been a while since you cleaned out your Muncie garage, now is the time to do so. There needs to be enough space available to accommodate your electric vehicle home charger of choice.

3. Find Your Power Panel & Assess Your Energy Consumption

Most new homes come with a 100 Amp power panel, but you will want to check your main circuit breaker for the amperage rating. You will then need to determine how much energy you use at home regularly. It is important not to overload your electric distribution panel.

4. Hire an Electrician

Before installing an electric vehicle charging station, you will have to hire a skilled electrician. Next, hire an electrician. An electrician can install a dedicated 240-volt plug or add a hardwired circuit back to the power panel.

5. Purchase a Charger and Have it Installed

If you have not yet purchased an electric vehicle home charger, find one that meets your needs and have it professionally installed.
