How Often to Replace a Car Battery

Car Battery with Tools

Your car battery is an essential component of your vehicle’s performance, and determining how often to replace your car battery can save you major stress down the road in New Castle. Many experts recommend replacing your car battery every 4-5 years, although battery life can vary widely. It’s a good idea to get your battery tested if you notice the following warning signs:

  • Dimming headlights
  • More frequent need for engine revving or jump starts
  • Takes longer to start the engine when you turn the key/push the button
  • Unusual power fluctuations

What Causes Car Battery Deterioration?

Before we dive into how to know if you car battery needs to be replaced, why do batteries deteriorate in the first place? Many factors can affect the lifespan of your car components, including:

  • Heat: Hot weather causes the liquids in your battery to evaporate faster. Drivers from hotter climates usually replace their batteries faster than those in colder climates.
  • Vibrations: Your battery’s hold-down clamps keep your battery stable, even on bumpy roads in Yorktown. If the clamps are loose, the vibrations can damage your battery components..
  • Jump Starts: If your dead battery leaves you stranded in Indianapolis, a jump start can be a lifesaver. But, jump starts are also hard on the battery. Too many can cause your battery to weaken rapidly.
  • Time: Even with the best care possible, batteries simply must be replaced over time. So if it’s been a few years since your last replacement, you might want to think proactively.

How Much is a Replacement Car Battery?

Let’s say you’re nearing the end of your battery lifespan. How much is a replacement car battery? Car batteries cost anywhere between $75 and $120, or even upwards of $200 for a premium model. Hybrid batteries are even more expensive, costing thousands of dollars for just one unit. However, hybrid car batteries are covered under warranty by law to protect drivers from the cost.

How to Test a Car Battery

Testing your car’s battery is a great way to determine whether or not you need a replacement. You can either head to the service center for a battery check or try one of the two DIY methods:

The Headlight Test:

  1. Turn on the engine, but the car in park. Your headlights should be active.
  2. Rev the engine and watch the headlight beams. Does the brightness change?
  3. If the headlights get brighter, the current is not strong enough to keep the lights at normal brightness while the car is idling.
  4. Take your car to a Muncie service center at this point for further assessment.

Using a Digital Multimeter:

  1. Set the voltmeter to 20 DC volts and locate the battery.
  2. Touch the negative terminal (black) with the negative meter probe (also black).
  3. Touch the positive terminal (red) with the positive meter probe (also red)
  4. Have a friend turn on the headlights and check the voltmeter reading.
  5. At 80℉, 12.5 volts or higher means your battery is fully charged. 12.3 volts means it’s at about 75% charged.11.8 volts or lower means you have 25% or less charge.
