How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers should typically last six to twelve months, but depending on the temperatures and conditions, the rubber blades will wear out sooner with strong exposure to snow, ice, rain, salt, and extreme temperatures. If you find that your windshield wipers are no longer doing their job on drives around Muncie, take the time to check for signs of wear and see if there is actually an issue, then schedule an appointmentat our service center to get them replaced. You can also order OEM windshield wipers through our parts department and have them professionally installed at our service center along with your other routine maintenance.

How to Change Windshield Wipers: Signs of Deterioration

If you lift up your windshield wipers to check for signs of wear and tear, there are a few things you may notice that let you know you should probably replace your windshield wipers. These include:

  • Gaps in Windshield Clearing
  • Scratches to Windshield Glass
  • Loose chunks of blade
  • Cracked Rubber
  • Separated Blades
  • Screeching Noise

If you don’t have any of these problems, you may just need to give your windshield wipers a quick clean. Simply pull-up your windshield wiper blades and run your finger across it. If you feel dirt and debris, wash it off and see if that fixes the problem.

How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are one of the more inexpensive parts to replace on a vehicle and with our parts specials it’s even more cost-effective. So, if you want to change wipers yourself at your Indianapolis or New Castle home, all you need to do is follow the steps below:

  1. Position your windshield wipers so they’re upright.
  2. Pull them carefully away from the windshield.
  3. Read the instructions on your windshield wiper’s packaging for how to remove them. You’ll either have to depress a tab to pull it off or slide it off with the wiper arm.
  4. Discard the old wiper blades.
  5. Clean your windshield thoroughly to prevent dust and dirt from getting on your new windshield wipers.
  6. Install the new windshield wipers by doing the reverse of steps two and three.
  7. Replace the blade on the other side.
  8. Carefully return your windshield wipers back in their regular position.

The process should be quick and easy, but if you’d rather have them installed professionally and avoid the hassle of doing it yourself, one of our service staff at Greg Hubler Ford can do just that.
