If you’re unfamiliar with coolant, it’s a fluid that helps regulate the temperature of your engine block and its components by transferring heat. Your Ford coolant is a vital component for both new and used vehicles. The additive in engine coolant helps prevent it from freezing below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and overheating above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep reading to discover more about checking coolant levels and determining when it’s time to change it on your New Castle drives.
Engine coolant, also referred to as antifreeze, is a liquid that helps regulate and maintain the temperature of an engine by transferring heat away from the engine block and other components. It is typically made up of a mixture of water and ethylene glycol, which serves as the primary heat transfer fluid. Learn more about Ford coolant, and how to check it, below:
First things first, coolant levels deplete over time, so it’s a good idea to check up on the cooling system every three to six months. Usually, the liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red. If it’s brownish or even colorless, flush the system and replace the fluid. Here’s how to check your coolant level:
To check the coolant level in your vehicle, there’s no need to remove the radiator cap. Simply locate the markings on the side of the reservoir and ensure that the fluid level reaches the “full” line. If it falls below this line, remove the radiator cap and add coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant and water as needed. Be sure to consult the bottle to confirm if the coolant is premixed. Additionally, it’s wise to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for any leaks or signs of damage.
Note: If you’re adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, don’t attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
